MOST IMPORTANTLY...If they are in the classic "pure peat" mix that garden centers often sell them in..Get them out of there!! Your plants will die and blacken....1/2 sand 1/2 peat works good. I have grown VFT's in pure Sphagnum peat moss since 1974, and they grow very very well in it. The problem with most store bought flytraps are: - The pot is too small, specifically not deep enough
- The media is long fiber sphagnum, which combined with a smaller pot can keep the crown of the plant a bit too wet
- The media is not pure sphagnum peat moss, but is a nursery mix that contains a small amount of fertilizer charge.
Sand & peat is a very good mix to use for sure, but you must ensure the quality of the sand. Bad sand is infinitely worse than no sand. Also, the sand must be of a larger diameter and coarse, or else it will quickly work its way to the bottom of the media.

Hi Mike...For some reason, i haven't had much success with Dionaea here in Fl. in a pure sphagnum peat media. Maybe it's the outrageous humidity combined with the fact of a practically non-existant Winter. The poor things barely "rest" in the Winter here...Yes indeed, course sand is best for a peat/sand combo, especially if any above watering takes place. How's it going up there in TN.?

How's it going up there in TN.? We are currently enjoying our two weeks of autumn. We will then ping pong between 85F and 30F until April, with everyone suffering continual headcolds. We will have two weeks of spring followed by 6 months of 95F+ temperatures, no rain, and severe mold and sinus problems. Which will then bring us full circle back to where we are now... I'm really thinking about moving to another state......

WOW! Sounds like Florida...We're getting our first cool "snap" as they call it, this weekend. Which means i may need to dig out a sweatshirt to wear for a day or two:) I'm going out to see P. pumila this weekend and snap a few pics. They should be flowering by now.
