Hello. I have a large pot of VFT with scores of all green vigorous plants that's half a dozen years old now. I thinned the herd and sent a bunch of plants to a friend's house, then was STUNNED at the end of the season to see his pot with bright red traps, mine being all green. I keep my pot all summer on a deck in full blazing sun and drench it daily with rain water, but my friend says he keeps his pot on the ground where it's hotter in standing water a few inches deep and that makes all the difference. Does anyone out there have this experience? Both of us use all peat moss for substrate and rain water only. Thanks!!!

That seems a bit strange. The difference in conditions that you report seem similar. Light intensity is likely the most important determinant of trap color for the same clone.

Bob thanks. My friend asked about lighting, but the deck is in full sun and faces due south. We both overwinter them in a cool southern window. I've repotted every few years with fresh peat. They try to bloom like heck in the spring but I cut all but a few flower stalks. Every trap is full of bugs all the time, so nutrition isn't a problem. What I'll do this spring is make a second pot and put a few on the ground with standing water like my buddy does. I was afraid of standing water because of the mosquito larvae that inevitably appear, but I'll just have to dump it more frequently. Honestly, except for color my culture is so successful I could sell 'em!

Well I've noticed that situation here, my plants came from TC some 5 years ago and at first they were green, and grew, then they had some red traps and now, even so they are bigger than at any past time they have green traps, even more, when they had red traps they were in the 2" pot they came in, and now in a 4" (not really sure haven't measure it, but it is considerably bigger) they have the green traps and bigger size, even receiving a couple of hours more of sun.
