Hi All, While I am a big fan of VFTs I don't have very many, and they're all relegated to my outdoor bog. Right now I have flower stalks coming up, right on time, on them here in Philadelphia. However, one is of that mass marketed 'Akai Ryu', which by now I imagine most VFT growers find is way passe. As I understand it, I believe that akai ryu was developed from a single clone, which happens to be sterile, and thus every plant that people grow of this cultivar is clonally identical. Then my question is, while 'Akai Ryu' , or Red Dragon, is self-sterile,(and some even say that normal VFTs are self-sterile, although many have proved otherwise, ie; I've made viable seed in the past from selfing just one plant, which was the only one in flower) is it possible that it can contribute, as a pollen or stigmatic parent, to producing offspring with a normal, non-cultivar VFT? This would be hopefully to produce some interesting features passed on to the next generation. I'm guessing not, because I imagine the Akai Ryu has an inbalance in chromosomes, compared to a normal VFT, but I can't remember everything I've learned in Botany 101 in college, so I was hoping someone in the forum could re-educate me! Thanks, and take care all, best, Nick Haywood (bluesboy)

I am not aware of any Dionaea clones with an imbalance of chromosomes, whatever that means. I am also not aware of any information suggesting that 'Akai Ryu' is a sterile clone. The only clone from which I have had trouble obtaining viable seed is 'Wacky Traps' -- although I am trying again this year. I think the reason is that the stigma appears to be deformed and perhaps not receptive to pollen. The pollen appears to be normal, but this year I am trying it on a different Dionaea clone to see if I get viable seed. I've wondered if 'Akai Ryu' is self-sterile. Once I had a pool filled with several hundred of them and let them flower. I crossed the plants by rubbing one plants flowers onto anothers. None of them set seed. In fact, the flower heads were dying down just a couple of weeks afterwards. I've also attempted to self them before, to no avail. I dont believe it is sterile, as it appears to be able to be crossed with other genets. But it is either self sterile, or reaaaaaaaalllllly picky about being selfed with itself or another of its clones.

I have crossed Red Dragon to itself and other VFT's and gotten seed from them. I have a few flats with 1 year old plants that I have made crossing of. Some are all red and others at this point look like typicals with no red coloration other then the inner trap.
