Huh very interesting! My S. purpurea is also flowering and we live relatively close( plant wise), S. X catesbaei and rubra flowered for me early in spring. I was surprised to see S. purpurea flowering right now but I guess is alright. What was the source of that sarra purpurea of yours?

Late flowering sometimes happens and it may occur into autumn or even early winter. Such flowers are often held on very short stems as shown in the linked photo.
