Last Fall was not gentle on the 14'X14" Eagle Scout made bog at New Pond Farm in Redding, CT. Tropical Storm Irene dumped so much rain, the adjacent river overflowed, scouring out the bog, dumping in debris and generally ruining it. Of the 75 Purpureas, only 21 survived. Not one of the plentiful sundews made it through either. In April of 2012, we reconstructed the bog, this time adding a barrier of 2" X 10" oak boards to deflect any future runoff around the bog. In addition we added 22 bales of peat moss and 2 yards of sand to bring up the soil level by about 8 inches. With the salvaged plants, plus 20 purps from my collection, plus sundews purchased through Meadowview, plus an anonymous "saint" who donated much needed live sphagnum, we replanted the bog. Add in the fallen cedar tree for a finishing touch, and the bog lives on! Enjoy the photobucket pics! Matt [http://s804.photobucket.com/albums/yy321/mrobey/]
