If ya don't post for awhile, new people come in and don't know who you are... seen it across all the forums. picrophyll has posted the BEST pics of Ceph's in the wild for quite awhile. I'd hate to see him stop because people were too quick to judge, then come up with discussions that get convoluted. Seen it happen before...

Hi Richard, Could it have been 1984 instead of 1974? I just spoke with him this week. Phill is not that old...in the seventies, he should only be a young boy.

"Okay, I'll bite. What are the concerns of taking two pitchers and two leaves, and what are the assumptions? "
Because then everyone will just want to take " a couple leaves and pitchers" .
If everyone who goes looking for plants takes just a leaf and pitcher, plants disappear. Eventually someone will come by and figure" why waste my time with 2 leaves and a pitcher when i can take the whole plant?"
Boundries are there for a reason. If you give people an inch they take a foot. Let people take parts of plants, some will take the whole thing.
Cephalotus are expensive. A pitcher and 2 leaves can cost you $50 on ebay. So its just as simple as taking a small part of a plant.
Also, what do you mean you had a permit but didnt use it because you only took a leaf/pitcher? Can you imagine how easy it would be too poach plants if a person walked around with a permit taking plant parts and not using it?

As with everyone else who was wondering what Phill meant...so I asked him. He explained that he owns a permit which allows him to take the WHOLE plant for research and as herbarium specimen. He chose not to use it and took two pitchers and two leaves instead, so that the plant was left intact. It was the only plant he has seen so far (he has seen thousands) that has pitchers that size and he feels it belongs to the wild. Cheers!

Unfortunately Phil Mann has decided to no longer visit this forum.
The circumstances are ironic because it was no doubt partly due to his efforts that Cephalotus follicularis had been delisted from the CITES Appendix II.

Unfortunately Phil Mann has decided to no longer visit this forum. Yes - imo this was/is a real loss. While many of us can guess or hypothesize about Cephalotus natural conditions, Mr. Mann could share knowledge based on years of in-situ observations as well as from growing many thousands of plants. The attack-first, ask questions later approach is not 'one size fits all'. While there are many who probably deserve such treatment, it's use here caused more harm than good.
