Hey Bob,
1)What do you think about adding a category for non-CP?
2)What about a section on trip reports? Maybe put a major new header on the front page called "News from the Field", then break that down into separate sections for each continent?
Cheers
Barry

I like the idea of "News from the Field". Does this 6 continent breakdown make CP sense? Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, and Australasia. I excluded Antarctica for obvious reasons.
For the non-CP category, what did you have in mind? There is a category Miscellaneous CP's (Triphyophyllum, Ibicella, Brocchinia, etc)
Would the non-CP category include peas and petunias?
(This is Barry writing, modifying Bob's entry to try flexing some moderator skills.)
(Joseph; ditto above.)

I think your breakdown sounds great. There will be difficult choices, since the border of Asia and Australasia is messy, etc., but this should work pretty well.
Yeah, the non-CP category would have peas and petunias. But also Rafflesia, Amorphophallus, Cuscuta, Desmodium motorum, and all the other interesting non-CP that we find interesting.
After all, the plant on the back cover of the December 2006 CPN is absolutely a non-CP (at least, according to our current understanding).

Are there any plans to give a lounge/general discussion area?

Are there any plans to give a lounge/general discussion area? An interesting question. Watching the other forums, I've noticed that sometimes the most egregious postings that step over the line of questionable decency) seem to congregate around the "lounge" areas. Is that your impression? I'm not saying the idea should be nixed...far from it...I'm just asking a background question. You've got more experience on this than I do. Barry

I agree that often the spam and rule breaking happens in the general discussion area compared to other areas, but at the same token I think a lounge area would offer a place to chill out and "shoot the breeze". Talk about funny stories, politics, personal issues, etc. Politics may get heated and passionate but it's overall fun and all of the CP'ers i've ever met are pretty respectful. Besides I'll personally watch the political discussions since I live eat and breath news and media anyway I think our members can handle a general discussion area, I do. We all care about out plants, that's a given, but everyone also cares for each other and I know many people, including myself, who have had to use general discussion area for support and such.

The plus with having a general/lounge area is that it helps keep the off-topic banter out of the other areas.

Hmmmm. When we initially discussed setting up an ICPS Forum I think we decided that there were many other CP forums and other opportunities elsewhere where such open non-CP discussions are encouraged. I suggest we let this question float for a few days and see where the discussion goes.
Since this is an ICPS Forum, the ICPS Board will ultimately decide on design and content. That said, however, membership opinion has a significant impact on Board decisions.

Nice suggestions, Nicole.
One discussion category that I predict will die from lack of use is the "discussion of CPN articles not yet published." I consider it a holy vow of editorship not to discuss an article in prepublication, with anyone other than the authors, referees, or my tear-stained pillow. Meanwhile, authors know that they shouldn't leak article pre-publication, otherwise there's not much point in spending ICPS money getting the article published...

Oooohhhh!!!
An important new category:
Meeting announcements
I think this should be a main category in the "General CP discussions" area. That way, it could have threads for ICPS international conferences, the Sarawak summit, regional meetings, etc.

How about a Photography tips and techniques section/category? People can improve their photography skills, compare or learn about new equipment etc.
