Hi there
I bought a exoterrra fogger to create an artificial fog during the night for my highland Nepenthes and Heli's, like in nature.
Sometimes it's gonna run in the day too, like on cloudy days in habit.
Now I realized the smoke gives a bit a smell, a bit simular as a smoke machine on parties... it's used for frogs and ather amphibians an reptiles so I suppose it could not harm the plant.
Meanwhile I think its better to let the plants leaves completely dry out inbetween the foggings to not result in fungus and other rotting proces... I do not cover the terrarium as the fog stays near the waterlevel and covers a bit the plants. also there is more air circulation then
suggestions ...
is it good thing or not so well to use this??
Thanks

the Exo-terra fogger works by agitating the water molecules with a certain wavelength. this creates a cool low lying fog, the smell you smell is ozone, also created by the machine as a by product. this is not harmful and may even be beneficial to plants. It is a good idea though, to work it on a timer as you plan, so as to not encourage mold. Many terrarium growers use this.

well i used it and be warned don't use it too much or it could cause mold fungus and root rot if used too much.
thanks ieatflys

Hi, guys,
Do your fog machine has timer or some device like that so that the machine can automatically start to spray and stop spraying? If so, could you recommend one (a selling link is better)?
Thanks, Zhilin

you will find cheaper timers at your local hardware store. they are not expensive or complicated.

Hi, peterhewitt, Thanks. I mean, is there any Reliable & Cheap automatic fogger machine that can spray at a given time and the spray lasts for a given time? I know many fogger machines that cannot automatic spray. They need people to turn on it or turn off it. I think a timer separately bought from other sources cannot make a non-automatic fogger machine become an automatic one, right? Zhilin you will find cheaper timers at your local hardware store. they are not expensive or complicated.

Wrong. You can find an external timer that fits at the wall socket. These usually work in 15 minute intervals, so you can run the fogger for 15 min every hour or whatever you require. i have many of them at various points throughout my nursery. I pay, what amounts to about 7 dollars each for them. these timers can be used for lights ,heaters or just about any electrical appliance.

ok lots of growqers use it too!!!
what about the foggings now??? Only during night like in habit or during daytime too???
seems like the fogger doesn't work well with cold water?? possible?? I use cold water to cool down the terrarium? Also I realized after 15 min the terrarium isn't saturated. how long do you guys make it run?? 15 min or more ?? 45' / 1 hour??
and at least what with the water spray. if there is a pot or object to close, it doesn't lake any smoke. if I let the thing go, it splaches water on the plants.
Do you guys use a technique to let the fog go easely in the terrarium without the waterspray splashing on the plants?
happy growing
C.

I dont really have anything to add here, except more questions. There is the cool factor, yes, but could someone explain why one should get a fogger? You see, I am planning on building a terrarium this summer, and since I am building it from scratch, I am tempted to all out and purchase the same fogger teinkes bought for it. I have three highland nepenthes and a heli that perhaps would benefit from it, but I am not 100% convinced. Does anyone use foggers and swear by them? and if so, why?
Thank you, CJ

Thanks, peterhewitt. What's the name of the fogger you used? I checked some online stores for foggers, and although I found lots, the reviews generally are not good. So I am interested in your fogger, since I think it should be durable. Wrong. You can find an external timer that fits at the wall socket. The fogger i use is a no name brand, but works in the same manner as the Exo-terra ultrasonic fogger. I set my timer to go on for 15min ever hour during the nightime, this should easily get the humidity up. During the day i have it go on for 15 min at 12 o'clock, 1 and 3. You can stop it from splashing by trying different containers to put the fogger in to , in the terrarium. Very high nocturnal Humidity is essential for the good growth of some species of Nepenthes and Heliamphora, and this is one of the ways to achieve this. Yes i use the fogger myself in 6 propagating terrariums. exo-terra is a good brand name

Hi My terrarium contains 8cm water. plants are standing on a raster 1cm above the water. when I put the fogger is on, the mist/ fog stays about 5cm above the water but do not cover the plants. When I blow in the terrarium the fog spread all around. Do you guys use a fan? and if yes what type. I don't think it's usefull. If the fan is on the mist would dissepears quickly. Peterhewitt, how do you use the foggers in the terrariums? You heat the water? is the bottom of the thank filled with water or do you use another system. plants on raster??

I have my plants lifted up 10cm of the floor on a rack, i keep at least 7cm of water on the floor of the terrarium. In some of them i have the unit in the water of the terrarium, in a couple i keep a container such as a plastic milk jug for the unit to go in to with water. I use a computer fan to suck air through the terrariums, you have to use a hygrometer to measure humidity, the fog disperses and disappears but the humidity will be raised. you don't really want your plants to be completely wetted by the fogger, its better to raise the local humidity around them. i never heat the water as you want cool water to assist in a temp drop at night.

I use the same one in a custom made tank to fit in a 4 tier greenhouse. I have it on at night time, 1 hour before lights go out and 1 hour after. I also have a fan on the top shelf blowing air out of the greenhouse through slits pulling cold air in from the floor. I keep my rajah, mikei and a pot of red sphag in the tank, heli's are in the shelf above. I've found the fogger heats up the water slightly so the temp inside the tank does not drop as much and the humidity is higher in the shelf above the tank when it's on.

Hi, prmills, Is your greenhouse a small one like a bookshelf? If so, do you have any picture on it (with your equipment)? I am considering buy one in this summer or the fall. So I would like see such pictures. Thanks, Zhilin I use the same one in a custom made tank to fit in a 4 tier greenhouse. I have it on at night time, 1 hour before lights go out and 1 hour after.
