Hello, David here. I am interested in corresponding or joining a Nepenthes Club in the Washington DC area. Are there any? I am in Silver Spring, Maryland and am not familiar with any organization, anyone out there know of any or want to start one? Thanks

I posted this message 4 months ago and got no responses. Does this mean no one in my area is interested in Nepenthes? HELLO, anyone out there? ? David

Hi David:
Why don't you come join us down at Meadowview, near Fredericksburg, VA? We raise a lot of Nepenthes and a number of our members are also into these plants. Also, a good reason to visit and meet some of our members is the upcoming lecture by Stewart McPherson on May 1. Stew will have some amazing Nepenthes photographs.
Sincerely,
Phil Sheridan Meadowview

Phil, Thank you very much for the invitation. Where is Fredericksburg, VA, in relationship to my location in Silver Spring, MD?

Hi David:
Fredericksburg is about 1.5 hours south of D.C. The city is directly south on Interstate 95.
Best,
Phil

David,
There have been a number of attempts to create and (more importantly) maintain a Washington DC-area CP Society over the years. None have survived long-term, unfortunately. Not really sure why, actually.
I kept the National Capital Carnivorous Plant Society (NCCPS) alive for several years with regular meetings, as well exhibiting/selling plants at a Fairfax County VA park's annual plant show and sale.
I believe that there was Potomac society before that, and in the 1990s there was an active East Coast US club (I attended a great weekend meeting at Botanique near Charlottesville, VA in 1995, I think).
Given that there are two CP-related nurseries in the DC area (you've already heard from Meadowview, there's another, Carnivorous Plant Nursery, in Montgomery County, MD closer to you), it shouldn't be difficult to form the nucleus of a club again.
Perhaps expand the reach? A society stretching from the Pinelands of New Jersey to the Longleaf Pine savannahs of the Carolinas would have a decent number of potential members and terrific opportunities for field trips.
I'd be happy to join and support, but in terms of trying to start one again? To parapharase Danny Glover, I think I'm getting too old for that -----.

i know this post was from way back when but i am in the process of starting to form a CPS for the MD,DC,VA, NJ/PA area and possibly include NC in the group. Im in the process of acquiring resources for starting this up and hopefully a few people to help me along the way as well as having no idea how in the world i will get this off the ground or actually see this through as it has been an idea of mine for the last year or 2 but never really thought i would be really wanting to do it until now

Hi CPFreak:
You might want to consider Meadowview as an alternative to all the work and heartache of starting a new club in our region. We've already got the organization, facilities, and track record to do what you want to do. For example, this past May we hosted a fabulous talk by Francois Mey on the Nepenthes of Indo-China. If you would like to volunteer and help get more activities going in the area we would be more than happy to help with such efforts. Please feel free to contact me privately at meadowview@pitcherplant.org.
Sincerely,
Phil Sheridan, Ph.D. Director Meadowview Biological Research Station

yes this is always an option too, in the end starting a new club in the area may infact be too time consuming more so when you dont have the resources to start one up lol
