I built my terrarium from bottom to top: pebbles, charcoal, burlap, sphagnum/sand. After a month, the burlap has become moldy and my two pitcher plants have been turning brown. Is this from the mold or because they need to be winterized? I live in cincinnati, oh.

Many factors may be the cause of your problem. Burlap is an interesting choice of substrate material, I haven't heard of it being used by anyone else. Mold will grow in the presence of oxygen. Perhaps you aren't keeping the peat wet enough. The substrate layer is like a water reservoir and I would suggest keeping it full in warm weather. I assume that you used the burlap to keep the peat separate from the substrate. When peat is wet, it is pretty spongy and will mostly stay in place. Terrarium environment may be perfect for growing mold. Leave it uncovered to allow air to move freely. Are you growing indoors or outside? I'm assuming outside since you are asking about winterizing. Will the terrarium flood if left outside? How deep is the peat/sand mix? What's the temperature and weather like in your area? More info will be helpful to other members of this forum to resolve this issue. We've all had our failures, but we keep on trying. ;D
