I recently read the faq on this web site about building a terrarium and it was very informative and i really got a lot out of it but was wondering about lighting. the article says to use 40 W fluorescent lights and that the heat from the ballast was a concern and that you should re configure the fixtures with the ballast on the outside of the fixtures and add a little fan to dissipate the heat. and I was wondering if the mini fluorescent bulbs that screw into a regular light socket would work as well. do the emit the same kind of light? has anyone out there had any experience using this type of lighting and if so how did it work out

I've been using a grow chamber setup where half of the plants are lit using this: www.exo-terra.com/en/products/compact_top.php model pt2227 The CFL's you should be looking to pick up would be anything 5000k color or better. I believe I am using 3 6500k bulbs (True Color - Full Spectrum made by - can't remember but picked them up at Lowes). Only downfall I hear about using this kind of setup/bulbs is that you must keep the plants fairly close to the bulbs to utilize as much lumen output as possible, but the bulbs also generate some heat so overheating is definitely an issue and takes some tweaking to get right. Most people around hear seem to love the 4ft or 2ft T5 HO flourescent bulb setups. You can check out a pretty thorough site on some OTHER lighting options here: www.littlegreenhouse.com/accessory/lights.shtml

I have one of my Neps growing under a screw-in CFL (Compact Florescent Lamp) rated at 100w equivalent, 26w actual, and it seems to love it. I have the bulb screwed into one of those clamp-on reflectors, the top of the plant several inches away from the light. Works fine. Les

I had some pretty serious initial misgivings about anything resembling a spotlight in a 5 gallon tank, but my plants are happy as can be!
