IMO, VFTs should not be grown indoors... ever...because they have problems going dormant indoors, because they dont get the decreasing photoperiod and decreasing temp cues indoors.. What is so difficult about setting the timer for a shorter photo period and closing the vent in your grow room and/or turning down or unplugging the heater in your terrarium?? I agree that it may be better to grow them outside in most regions but they can be given all the cues indoors also. Instead of hijacking someone else s thread to argue, why don't you start a new one?

Classic 'my way is the only way' mentality of growing. You'll learn... yeah..hopefully you will get over your "'my way is the only way' mentality of growing. Someday you'll learn that others might have opinions different that yours, and you dont need to insult them because they do.. and "IMO" means "in my opinion"..apparently you werent aware of that bit of internet shorthand..so, unlike you, I always say something is my *opinion* and is not necessarily an absolute fact..I do that on puropuse so people dont think my methods of growing are absolute facts.. we arent talking about terariums in this thread..we are talking about windowsill growing..those ideas could work in a terrarium..but most people dont even heat terrariums..so really all you can control in a terrarium is light, but not temp..you would actually need to *chill* a terrarium to bring it down to the necessary temps..with some kind of refrigration unit to bring the temps down into the 40's and 50's F (4 to 10C) how many people chill an indoor terrarium to bring the temps DOWN in the fall?? virtually none....thats why outdoors is SO much better than a terrarium..(IMO of course! I agree too..thank you...thats all I have been saying. no they cant, not easily..and newbies who try to grow indoors seldom have the means to do it properly..if they are grown on windowsills...which is why outdoors is better.. im not the one arguing...im simply debating.. others for some reason want to argue with me..I have no idea why..I dont see what the big deal is here. I dont ned to start a new thread because my OPINIONS are totally related to the discussion on this thread.. if someone doesnt want to believe me, thats fine.. but I didnt make up these rules of dormancy.. if they dont like the rules, take it up with God or Mother Nature, not me. I think you need to go back and re-read what I originally said. I think you misunderstood my summer climate comments.
But either way, "I think you need to label your phrases as opinions" is a really good way to wind people up. As are internet abbreviation lessons.

Gentlemen - Allow a Zen-like calm to descend... For what it's worth, I attempted to grow Dionaea on windowsills for about a decade. Year by year, I watched them get smaller, weaker and ever more spindly, until they finally croaked. I don't recommend it as a method of cultivation.

Aidan & all, No two windows are the same, and some Dionaea cultivars differ in their need, or lack of it, for dormancy! I have several cultivars that I have grown flowered, gotten seed, divided and shared with others for eight plus years without any winter dormancy. In fact, winter in Florida has been their growing period, and summer was just a slower growth time because of lack of light. I wouldn't recommend attempting wholesale style propagation on a windowsill, but increased plant size and reproduction should be possible. Now that I have the option I am growing these plants outside, and they are having a rough time adapting. (or I am?) It depends on the window, plant cultivar and the person doing the growing. Take care, Steven Stewart
