I have a small sundew growing in my capensis x spathulata pot. It produces 3 flowered flower stalks and has leaves like a very big d. spathulata or a small d. aliciae. I looked it up in the Savage Garden and it matches the definition of D. Brevifolia but it's smaller. I'm no good at identifying rosetted sundews. They all look alike to me. What is it? (Can't post any more photos because the camera is messed up.)

Without a photo there is no hope of identifying the plant.
Thread moved to Drosera board.

Hello turkeyoinker,
D. brevifolia is one of the smallest sundews that isn't a pygmy and some pygmies are larger. Yeah, until you know what to look for, they do look rather alike. Check the flower stalks, D. b. tends to have wet droplets on the stalk.

Anyone else care to guess D. venusta?
Identifying mystery African Drosera is certainly not my strong point!

Doesn't D. venusta has more strap shaped leaves, like a d. capensis x spathulata? Maybe, maybe not. Its flowering at this size, so it must be an adult. I'm seeing this plant all over my collections now. It's a weed!

D. brevifolia.
the sticky stalk gives it away. Alex

I have 3 D. venustas, and each one looks slightly different. One of them looks just like this one, though.

Hello, I'm not sure yet about the ID. The glands on the flower stalk clearly show it is not D. capillaris, but several southern African Drosera also have glandular flower stalks. Here are a couple not so hot photos of D. brevifolia in habitat: www.rci.rutgers.edu/~dpevans/D_brevifolia.htmI have never noticed hairs on the bottoms of the growing leaves, in my memory they are glabrous. The height of the flower stalks will help. D. b. are fairly short, while southern African species tend to have very tall flower stalks. D. b. has large white flowers with a dark center. The flowers on your plant appear like they were lilac colored--something you'll never see in D. b.. Also, the flower stalks of D. b are more erect than the flowers of your plant... See the old flower stalk in the top photo of the habitat plants?

It's definitely not D. brevifolia....looks more like something from the D. spatulata complex.

Most D. brevifolias I've seen (and only in the wild, I havent seen any cultivated) have leaves which are more wedge shaped, and they have more tentacled area and less petiole than the plant in this picture. It's kind of hard to tell the size of this particular plant, but even though it appears rather small, it still looks larger than most D. brevifolias I have seen. Granted, D. brevifolia may get larger in cultivation than they do in the wild.
EDIT: I've just checked out Dave's link, which shows perfectly what I am referring too.

I agree Mike. D. brevifolia are definitely more of a brownish {like D. capillaris} shade with extremely small petioles....The ones i've cultivated seem to take on more of an annual growth habit with HUGE amounts of viable seed. They still seem to remain small and compact in cultivation though. By the way...GORGEOUS PLANT in the pics! Ahh...look at those reds.

Hi,
this plant is not D. brevifolia (i am quite sure). It looks like something from the D. dielsiana/natalensis/venusta-Complex. Seed pictures as well as flower pictures would be a great help.
regards, Christian
