It looks like a fake weser. Did you get it from the garden centre?

Hello pigking, I am also very keen to know the proper names of the plants in my collection.
What has been mentioned before, that your plant appears to be what some call, "Garden Center Weser" -- though it is obviously not the actual cultivar, Pinguicula 'Weser', since it does not match the published standard. However, it may be from the same hybrid parents. So, it has a high probability of being the hybrid, (Pinguicula moranensis x Pinguicula ehlersiae). This is the same hybrid which was the source for the selection of the cultivar - Pinguicula 'Weser'.

Here's a P. 'Sethos'. I have both and truthfully can't tell the difference!

The vegetative growth is identical, at least to the human eye. It is the flowers which have a different pattern. In P. 'Sethos' the white spot in the middle spreads out into the purple in all directions. In P. 'Weser' the white area is smaller and there is a white line extending from it about half-way down the purple corolla.

Your plant is not a "false Weser". Rather, it appear to be Pinguicula 'Sethos', the sibling of P. 'Weser'. The vast majority of P. 'Sethos' in circulation are also fakes. A clearer photo of the "real thing" may be seen here - www.vicbrown.cpuk.org/images/Pinguicula/Sethos1.jpgThe plant in question would appear to be one of the two common, garden center fakes.

Hey guys, why do you suppose there all these fake 'sethos' and 'weser' floating around? I mean, considering how easily these two cultivars reproduce from leaf pullings, and simple division so easily that I wouldn't have any trouble believing most of the plants are the real deal; just that there seems to be a lot of 'Sethos' labeled as "'Weser'" and a lot of 'Weser' labeled as "'Sethos'".
The quality of Pinguicula flowers can change depending on the conditions. Well fed, large and happy pings produce much larger and darker colored flowers. Also excess warmth and strong light will bleach out the purple and pink colors from the flowers quickly--you see the same thing in Syringa (AKA lilacs) flowers.

Hey guys, why do you suppose there all these fake 'sethos' and 'weser' floating around? Simply because they are mass produced by a few large nurseries and distributed through the garden centre trade in many countries.

I think it is a P. 'Sethos' or a "false weser" for me they are the same, despite the very slight difference in the throat of the corolla P. 'Sethos' is a hybrid made by SLACK it seems to me, the link to the scans of his book is a good index. it shows a P. 'Weser' and his P. 'Sethos' wjclemens.com/cp_standards/pinguicula/Weser_Sethos/Weser_Sethos.htmjeff
